The late Murry Boyes and Maurice Darling were both councillors on the Tauranga Acclimatization Society when it was wound up.Murry and Maurice had the concept to establish a club which would continue along the same lines as the Acclimatization Society.

They set up a meeting at the Te Puna hall and it was at this meeting that the Western Bay of Plenty fish and Game Club was formed on the 10/03/1992.

The first meeting of the Western bay of Plenty Fish and Game Club was held at the Country Coolers in Rea Rd Katikati.

Founding members were Murry Boyes, Maurice Darling , Michael Darling, Andrew Darling, Don Samson, Brian Samson, Graeme Miles and Fred Tahau.

A constitution and set of goals were written. The objectives of the club were to promote recreation based on freshwater fishing and game shooting and to promote and enhance wetland development.

Activities which the Club has run which have been highly successful and enjoyed by many are

  • The Eye opener and Xmas clay bird shoots held at the Turners farm
  • The Tauranga harbour swan shoot which was first held in 1996 and is still today one of the club biggest event
  •  The Matakana  Island duck and pheasant shoot
  • The peacock shoots held in Opotiki and Wangapoua
  • The Game dinner and photography competition
